Death of homeless woman found at St James' Park 'not suspicious', say police

She was discovered outside Newcastle's stadium in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Emergency services attended the scene and an investigation has been launched.

The woman is yet to be formally identified but Northumbria Police are confident there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson said: "At 2.36am on Friday, police received a report that a body of a female had been found in a car park at St James’ Park, Newcastle.

"Emergency services attended and the body of a woman – who is believed to have been sleeping rough – was found.

"An investigation was subsequently launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, and police are satisfied there is no third party involvement.

"A formal identification process is ongoing, and a report will then be made for the coroner."

Newcastle's next game at St James' Park is not until February 23, two weeks today, when they host Huddersfield in a crucial game at the bottom of the Premier League.

The Terriers will be desperate to try and close the gap between themselves and safety while Rafa Benitez will see it as a golden opportunity to take a big step towards survival.

Benitez's Toon head to Wolves on Monday night, with Miguel Almiron available – by which point they could be on the brink of slipping into the bottom three.

However, 16th-placed Southampton host 18th-placed Cardiff meaning it is impossible for both sides to leapfrog the Magpies.
