Davidson College shattered a plethora of NCAA football records on Thursday night in its 30-point win over Division III opponent Guilford.
The Wildcats, best known for busting NCAA tournament brackets when Stephen Curry was lacing it up on the basketball court, put up basketball numbers on a football scoreboard by beating the Quakers, 91-61, in a game that was moved up two days due to Hurricane Florence.
The team was on pace to score 100 points and tally 1,000 yards, notching a program-record 57 points at halftime en route to 524 first-half yards.
Davidson plays in Football Championship Subdivision, a step below bowl-level competing schools. Under first-year coach Scott Abell, the team’s off to its best start — at 3-0 — since the beginning of the millennium.
In the win against Guilford, the Wildcats relied on their option offense to dominate the groundwork. Davidson set NCAA records for total yards (964) and rushing yards (685) in a game. The Wildcats averaged 15.5 yards each play on the night, with eight of their 13 touchdowns accounting for more than 50 yards.
Davidson’s defense didn’t exactly flourish, allowing 698 yards of Guilford offense. The two teams combined for a staggering 1,662 yards allowed in the downhill contest.
Davidson’s Wesley Dugger (186 yards on 14 carries) and Coy Williams (168 yards on 12 carries) paced a balanced rushing attack.
The Wildcats used three quarterbacks in the game, only passing eight times and completing all eight passes.
