Danny Welbeck silences critics as Arsenal secure 11th straight win for first time in 11 years

The striker, 27, proved himself alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after Alexandre Lacazette was dropped to the bench for the clash against Sporting.

Unai Emery suggested last month that Welbeck could disrupt the partnership of Aubameyang and Lacaztte if he continues to impress.

And the 27-year-old silenced his critics with a remarkable strike in the 77th minute of the Europa League tie.

Welbeck made the most of an error by Sebastian Coates, who carelessly let the ball roll past him and into the penalty area.

The ex-Manchester United forward latched onto possession and sent a powerful strike past the Renan Ribiero.

Matteo Guendouzi was another key figure for the Gunners – he was keen to move forward and always looking to crease chances.

Granit Xhaka started in the unfamiliar role at left-back as Emery looked to shake his team up in Portugal.

After a forgettable opening 45 minutes, the Gunners took control of the Group E clash at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The Gunners certainly lived up to their reputation of starting matches slowly this season.

Mohamed Elneny did not look his best, but Rob Holding and Guendouzi put in an encouraging display.

Aubameyang, who has scored eight goals this season, missed a number of chances to break the deadlock.

Emery's side now have control of the group ahead of the reverse fixture at the Emirates next month.
