Cowboys’ Xavier Su’a-Filo hopes to play vs. Buccaneers after losing vision in one eye for a day

FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys left guard Xavier Su’a-Filo sat at his locker Wednesday, smiling politely while wearing his sunglasses.

Well, technically, they were left tackle Tyron Smith’s sunglasses.

Smith lent Su’a-Filo the shades Sunday in Indianapolis after he returned to the locker room with a left eye contusion swelling so much he couldn’t see out of it for 24 hours.

“You’re just afraid of the unknown and wondering why your eye can’t open,” Su’a-Filo said Wednesday. “It’s something you never want to mess with. You only have two eyes.”

Su’a Filo was blocking for running back Ezekiel Elliott on fourth-and-1 at the Colts’ 3-yard line early in the second quarter. Su'a-Filo and the Cowboys aren't exactly sure what happened next.

They know Elliott didn’t reach the end zone — no Cowboy did in the franchise’s first shutout in 15 years — fumbling before recovering the ball for a 2-yard loss and turnover on downs.

They also know Su’a-Filo sustained blunt trauma to his eye on the play, seemingly poked by right tackle La’el Collins.

But memory of the play, like Su’a-Filo’s vision over the next day, is blurry.

“I went down, someone hit my eye, complete accident or whatever,” Su’a-Filo said. “Next thing you know, I couldn’t see out of my left eye."
