Chelsea flop Morata arrives at Atletico Madrid ahead of loan transfer deal

The striker is on the verge of completing his move back to Spain having asked to leave Stamford Bridge last month.

The 26-year-old was photographed with Atleti medical staff prior to undertaking fitness tests, having earlier admitted that he could not wait to get started at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Morata said: "I’m very happy for this stage, I have been waiting for days, I want everything to be completed and to start training with my team-mates."

Morata moves to Atletico days after Chelsea agreed a deal to take Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus for the rest of the season.

Chelsea have agreed to let Morata move to Atletico Madrid on an 18-month loan as Maurizio Sarri clears the decks of players he no longer wants.

There is understood to buy an option to make the transfer permanent written in to the deal, although that is not compulsory.

But should Morata come through his medical without any problems it is likely to spell the end of his disappointing time in West London.

Chelsea splashed out £60million to sign him from Real Madrid just 18 months ago but the player has never adjusted to the demands of the English game.

He has found it difficult to cope with the responsibility of becoming the focal point of the Blues attack and although Sarri believes he has the skills to play to his system, he has ultimately been found wanting.

Sarri insisted on the club bringing in Gonzalo Higuain on loan until the end of season because he knows the Argentinian can perform in the way he wants after working with him so well at Napoli.

Morata is the latest senior star to be heading for the Stamford Bridge exit as the Italian starts to overhaul the squad he inherited.

Victor Moses, a regular for two seasons under previous boss Antonio Conte, was shipped out on loan to Fenerbahce on Friday.

And youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi now looks to be heading out as well as he attempts to push through his move to Bayern Munich.

Hudson-Odoi yesterday handed in a transfer request as he tries to secure the move to Germany, having grown frustrated at his limited first team opportunities.

There are also doubts over the futures of defender Andreas Christensen after a bust-up caused by his disappearance from the Blues' bench before the end of the defeat to Arsenal.

Gary Cahill and Danny Drinkwater are others who are surplus to requirements and the club are hoping to ship the pair out before the transfer window closes.
