Chelsea eye Jamaal Lascelles transfer in January as Tottenham scouts also monitor Newcastle defender

The centre-back was an integral part of the Magpies successful first season back in the Premier League last season when they finished tenth.

A posse of clubs were linked with the 24-year-old last summer, but the Toon refused to sell their club captain at any price.

The Derby-born defender signed a new deal at St James’ Park last year until 2023.

However, the Newcastle Evening Chronicle claim Chelsea and Spurs could be preparing January swoops for the classy centre-back.

The fear on Tyneside is with the club struggling at the foot of the table, the Premier League big boys could start to circle and pick off their best players.

But Lascelles, who moved to Newcastle from Nottingham Forest four years ago, has made it clear he is committed to the club despite the poor start to the season.

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri may need defensive reinforcements if he loses Gary Cahill in January or as a free agent next summer.

Danish defender Andreas Christensen is another defender to fall foul of the switch to a conventional back four, and is also looking to leave Stamford Bridge due to a lack of game time.

If Spurs were to push for Lascelles, it could allow them to cash-in on Toby Alderweireld, who is still to sign a new deal with his current contract expiring next summer.

The club does have a one-year option to extend.
