Chelsea ace Cesc Fabregas picks up referee’s spray and moves it forward… but is he a genius or a cheat?

The Spanish midfielder, 31, was so desperate to gain an extra foot ahead of a free-kick, he did something we've never seen before, scooping up the foam and placing it down closer to the goal.

Vanishing spray was supposed to eliminate moving the ball and walls sneaking forward when it was introduced on to the world stage four years ago.

But after referee Kevin Friend laid down his marker and started pacing out the ten yards, Fabregas saw an opportunity.

With Friend and Everton's players distracted, he inched the foam – and then the ball – forward by a FOOT.

The cheeky move went unnoticed by the officials and players but was picked up by one observant Twitter user, @NorthBankNadim.

The Arsenal fan tweeted the video and tagged Chelsea, the Premier League and Sky Sports to highlight the "cheating".

He said: "Referee sprays grass. Fabregas PICKS UP SPRAY and places it further forward to gain a yard at a free kick.

"Have you ever seen a more petty form of cheating? Desperate, cynical club. @ChelseaFC @premierleague @SkySports"

Fabregas of course left Arsenal to return to Barcelona in 2011 but three years later joined the Stamford Bridge club and some Gunners supporters have still not forgiven him.

The tweet drew quite a reaction with most suggesting it was a brilliant trick and saw the funny side.

Even Arsenal fan @Gooner_GAWA called Fabregas a "genius" for it while @garthtravers and @Iainnolan1 said it was "brilliant".

Another user simply described the move as "elite behaviour".

But @ManLikeZee and @lee_woodhouse87 appeared to take the sarcastic approach.

The former said: "Wow this is the highest form of cheating I’ve ever seen in my life.

"This is despicable. I cannot comprehend how much difference that half a yard made. Outrageous.

"Ref should get the ruler out next time and place the spray exactly where contact was made."

And Lee added: "OH MY GOD. Ban him for life immediately!" as the exchanges continued between rival fans.

But a minority of Twitter users thought it was blatant cheating and the former Gunner should face retrospective punishment.

User @ivorcannon, said: "Should be punished for this surely?"

While @FPL_Gentleman added: "The fact that cheating is accepted is the reason it exists in many forms in today’s game.

"Sad that people condone it."

Unfortunately for the World Cup, Euros, Premier League, La Liga, FA Cup, Copa del Rey and Club World Cup winner, though, his tactics did not pay off.

Chelsea failed to score from the resulting free-kick, or indeed at any point during the game, as they could only manage a 0-0 draw with the Toffees.

The result means Maurizio Sarri remains unbeaten in the Premier League after his first 12 games – a league record – but the Blues lost ground on leaders Manchester City who beat United.
