Champions Day 2018: Rain finally arrives and can help Addeybb strike in QEII on flat season finale

Option after option was taken away with quick ground a no go for the four-year-old, as advertised in the Lockinge.

But as the flat season comes to an end on British Champions Day, he looks to have the perfect chance for some major compensation in the QEII.

Ascot Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels has predicted soft ground for Saturday’s showpiece.

That will be music to the ears of William Haggas who has endured a frustrating summer seeing this chap work morning after morning without getting him on the track since the Lockinge in May.

He would have been licking his lips after Addeybb eased to victory in the Lincoln in March and then a month later in the bet365 Mile at Sandown – both on ground with soft in the description.

The Lockinge can be taken with a pinch of salt. The meeting threw up all sorts of results and the quick ground was a solid no go for Addeybb.

His form on soft ground puts him right up with the favourites in the QEII. So long as Roaring Lion does divert to the Champion Stakes, he’s only 4lbs shy of the top rated Recoletos.

You could argue he’s been off the track too long, but that was no issue ahead of the Lincoln following a 176 day break.

He smashed Lord Glitters that day – albeit in receipt of weight – but never looked in danger, and was a class above.

In the Sandown Group 2 he had Stormy Antarctic and Aljazzi in behind – now a Group 2 and a Group 1 winner respectively.

You’ll need added stamina to win this on Saturday and Addeybb has this, with form over nine and ten furlongs previously.

It’s a Group 1, so easy to make cases for a number of the main protagonists. Laurens is a star and could again battle it out from the front.

Recoletos has the strongest form in the book with Alpha Centauri form lines. Lord Glitters thrives on the straight mile.

Century Dream is another that has threatened to win a big race and finally gets his conditions again too.

All in all, I think Addeybb’s price is inflated as he still has the Champion Stakes option.

He was well backed at Newbury, despite not having his conditions, and I think the same will happen on Saturday.

He’s my pick in a hot, hot race.
