Carrick reveals Sir Alex Ferguson's influence on Man Utd boss Solskjaer

MICHAEL CARRICK insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's interview for the Manchester United job long-term could not have gone any better.

Solskjaer picked up the pieces at Old Trafford following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December and has dramatically transformed things at the club.

The Norwegian was only supposed to steady the ship until someone else with a more glittering CV took over in the summer and then return to Molde.

But 14 wins in 18 games, a shot at finishing in the top four and a Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona have made Solskjaer a dead cert to remain at the club beyond May.

Carrick told ESPN: “It’s gone as well as anyone could have hoped for.

"The start we had at Cardiff was essential and then to go to Tottenham and win was massive. It’s just snowballed from there.

"He'll have to stay because I need to keep my job! I don’t think you’ll get many Manchester United fans or players who will say otherwise to be honest."

And Carrick who was handed a coaching role at United by ex-boss Mourinho has hailed the influence of club legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Solskjaer has been open about bringing Fergie back into the fold and the great man’s presence is having a positive effect.

Carrick added: “He (Solskjaer) is his own man.

"The boss (Sir Alex) is a massive influence on him, like he is with me.

“You’re influenced hugely over the years so there are strong similarities but he is his own man and he sees his own things. I wouldn’t want to be unfair on Ole.

“The boss is the boss, we all know that and in some ways he still is the boss but I think Ole has got to take an awful lot of credit for the position he’s in."

After defeat to Arsenal, Solskjaer will look for his side to get back to winning ways in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final away at Wolves.
