Carlos Hyde traded by Cleveland Browns to Jacksonville Jaguars for fifth-round draft pick

The Cleveland Browns confirmed Friday the team traded leading rusher Carlos Hyde to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Browns received a fifth-round draft pick in the 2019 draft in exchange for the running back.

Hyde, 28, had been Cleveland’s primary ball carrier through its first six games, rushing 114 times for 382 yards and five touchdowns. The Jaguars rank 18th in the NFL in rushing, generating 103.3 yards a game. With star running back Leonard Fournette continuing to nurse a nagging hamstring injury, Jacksonville’s ground game has stalled and Hyde should provide some depth and production until Fournette returns to full health.

The trade might signify, though, that Fournette is still a ways away from being cleared to return.

The Browns had been looking to give rookie second-round draft pick Nick Chubb more snaps, and he instantly becomes Cleveland’s starting running back. Chubb, in a small sample size of just 16 carries this season, has rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns for a 10.8 yard per carry average – far exceeding Hyde’s mark of 3.4.

Chubb did get most of his production in a Week 4 explosion against the Raiders in which he ran the ball three times for 105 yards and two scores.
