Canelo Alvarez 'dodged random drugs test' after Gennady Golovkin win, claims GGG's promoter

Canelo defeated Golovkin in September to claim the WBC and WBA middleweight world titles, while also handing GGG his first professional loss.

The pair first fought to a draw in September 2017, and their rematch was scheduled for May of this year – however, Canelo failed pre-fight drug tests.

In March 2018 it was revealed Canelo tested positive for clenbuterol leaving the rematch to be called off with the Mexican being handed just a six month ban.

Once the ban expired Canelo was free to fight and he eventually scored a majority points win over Golovkin in another modern classic in front of the T-Mobile Arena crowd, in Las Vegas.

However, Golovkin’s promoter and head of K2 Promotions Loeffler took to Twitter to claim Voluntary Anti Doping Association were scheduled to do a post-fight drug test.

The promoter claims Canelo, now a two-weight world champion, did not partake in the voluntary post-fight testing.

Loeffler said: "Vada scheduled a random test for GGG a week after the fight. I made sure that Canelo was also going to be tested.

“Next day the random test was cancelled. Strange that it was scheduled then cancelled, maybe Canelo was already in (Mexico) eating steaks celebrating his “decision”.”

Loeffler’s comment about Canelo eating steak in Mexico relates to the 28-year-olds positive clenbuterol test earlier in the year.

After Canelo tested positive for the banned substance, the Mexican and his team insisted the failed test was due to ‘contaminated’ meat the boxer ate while training in Mexico.

Team Canelo claimed the reason they tested positive for clenbuterol, a substance often used to strip weight, was down to contaminated steak that has been known to affect Mexican cow meat.

Although Canelo and his team protested their innocence they were still given the six month ban.

After Canelo’s rematch victory over Golovkin, talked turned to what could be next for the Mexican superstar.

A trilogy bout with Golovkin or mandatory defences against the likes of Jermall Charlo and David Lemieux were suggested.

However, Canelo shocked the boxing world as it was announced he would step up to super-middleweight to face Brit Rocky Fielding.

Fielding will defend his WBA ‘regular’ super-middleweight world title for the first time as he meets Canelo on December 15, at Madison Square Garden, in New York.
