Brendan Rodgers sees Leicester role as stepping stone to Arsenal or Chelsea job, claims ex-Celtic star Commons

The Northern Irishman signed a three-year deal at the King Power Stadium yesterday and will take charge of his first game at Watford on Sunday.

Commons – who was frozen out at Celtic when Rodgers arrived in 2016 – reckons Rodgers has taken a step down to leave the Scottish champions and join the Foxes.

But he thinks his former boss will have an eye on what is going on at Arsenal, and even Chelsea, during his stint back in the Premier League.

Retired Commons, 35, said: “It wasn’t that long ago that he was linked with the Arsenal job – that’s the sort of thing that Brendan wants.

“I think he wants to be winning titles, being part of cup-winning teams.

“Whether this is a stepping stone, whether or not this is going to be a couple of years job to look at possibly the likes of an Arsenal, maybe a Chelsea, I think that’s more in Brendan Rodgers’ mind right now.”

Rodgers enjoyed two-and-a-half successful seasons at Parkhead, winning the Treble in both full seasons.

But after getting Swansea promoted and going so close to winning the title with Liverpool in 2014, he is sure to have unfinished business in the Premier League.

When asked if the Leicester job is a bigger one than Celtic, Commons replied: “Absolutely not, no.

Brendan Rodgers is best of bad options for Leicester and can succeed with players where Puel failed

BRENDAN RODGERS, then. Bring it on, I say.

The writing had been on the wall for Claude Puel since since December, unfortunately.

Results were bad but performances at times were even worse.

Sorry, Claude, but time was up.

Now we must look forward.

So, step forward Brendan Rodgers. The new era will begin on Sunday at his former club Watford in front of the Sky cameras – let’s hope there is no repeat of Knockaert, Deeney et al…

Leicester fans seem fairly content with the 46-year-old. He would be a good appointment. Not terrible, not sensational, but good. And this is an appointment Leicester simply cannot afford to get wrong.

“I think the English Premier League has played a huge part in Brendan going down there.

“I think Leicester have got a top coach, a top manager, a proven manager.

“But I think, for me personally, Brendan’s better than Leicester.

“I think he’s proven that at Liverpool, he’s proven that at Celtic.

“I think he’s a tremendous manager, great coach and I think Leicester have got a real, real top manager there. Me personally, I think he’s better than that."

The new Foxes boss spoke to LCFC TV yesterday before watching Demarai Gray and Jamie Vardy score in a 2-1 win over Brighton, their fist victory since New Year's Day.

A delighted Rodgers said: "I'm very privileged and honoured to be here as Leicester City manager and I'll give my life to make the supporters proud of the club.

"Together, we'll be stronger and I'm looking forward working with the players, staff and supporters to make the right steps forward."
