Brandon Nimmo collapses in pain after plunking

One of the biggest bright spots of the Mets’ season dropped in a flash.

Brandon Nimmo crumpled to the ground in the top of the third inning in a game in Philadelphia on Thursday. It was unclear whether the 90-mph fastball hit his hand or the bat or both. However, the outfielder fell to the dirt as his grounder rolled to third base, and he stayed there for several minutes in obvious pain.

X-rays on Nimmo’s left index finger came back negative. Jose Bautista replaced him in right field.

Nimmo, the 25-year-old who came into his own this year, was in the All-Star conversation. After a second-half swoon, he had been surging, 10-for-14 in his past four games.
