Bomb squad rushed to stadium after grenade found hidden under away team's stand

Fortunately nobody was injured and the game went ahead between two rival teams in Argentina.

The discovery was made ahead of Argentinian third-tier side Ituzaingo's derby match against Deportivo Merto at the Estadio Carlos Alberto Sacaan stadium in the capital city Buenos Aires.

Local media report the grenade was found between two and three hours before the stadium opened for the match.

The explosive device was reportedly found under one of the stands where the Deportivo Merto fans were set to sit.

Official sources said: "It was found deposited on the ground, under the walls of the visitors' stand and close to the press cabins.

“The facilities were closed to safeguard the area."

Local media report an Anti-Explosives Unit were called to the scene and the grenade was removed without delaying kick off.

The grenade was later detonated in a safe place, according to reports.

Ituzaingo president Hernando Politano told local news outlet Infobae: "I was in the stadium when it was found.

"It was half buried. It had the shape but it didn't even look like a grenade, it looked like something buried.

"It was buried under one of the stands.

"Guarantees have been given and the security operation was carried out with normality."

The Primera C match finished 0-0 and no further incidents were reported during the match.

Perhaps the most exciting moment of the match came when a fan won a moped in the half-time raffle.
