BARNSLEY have confirmed that a supporter tragically passed away towards the end of the club's 2-2 draw with Derby.
Jeffrey Wroe, 66, suffered a cardiac arrest inside the stadium but he was unable to be revived despite the medic's best efforts.
Barnsley released a statement on their official site that read: "Barnsley Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a supporter at Wednesday night’s fixture against Derby County.
"66-year-old Jeffrey Wroe was treated by emergency services at Oakwell towards the end of the match, but devastatingly, was unable to be revived.
"The club has been liaising with and will continue to support the family and friends of Mr Wroe through this exceptionally difficult time, whilst asking for their privacy to be respected."
Wednesday's opponents Derby County also issued a heartfelt statement that read: "Derby County Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of this news and offers its condolences to the family and friends of Jeffrey Wroe."
Tributes have poured in from supporters upon learning of the sad news.
One wrote: "Nobody should go to a game and not go home.
"All my respect goes out to the Barnsley fan who unfortunately passed away at the game yesterday."
Another added: "No one should ever go to a football match and not return home. RIP to the Barnsley fan who died last night."
