Ballon d'Or: Cristiano Ronaldo's sister blames mafia as star and Lionel Messi miss out on prize to Luka Modric

Elma Aveiro, 39, amazingly said the result showed the world was “rotten” and tainted by mafia and money.

She took to social media in the aftermath of Modric breaking Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s decade of dominance on the prize to rage: “Unfortunately this is the world we live in, rotten, with mafia and f***ing money.”

In a mysterious end to her message, she added: “The power of God is a lot greater than all this rottenness. God takes his time but he doesn’t fail.”

His other sister Katia posted a picture of Ronaldo after he won a previous Ballon d’Or and wrote: “Best player in the world….for those who understand football of course.”

Their messages received a mixed response from fans.

One said: “Cristiano came second. It’s being a bad sport to carry on the way you guys do. Congratulate the winner and hopefully Cristiano will win the next one.”

Another added: “Cristiano achieved a lot last season but Modric deserved to win.”

Celia Desousa took to social media to say: “I like Cristiano a lot and think he would have been a deserved winner. But Elma is very wrong with her comments, very wrong.”

But Portuguese national Isabel Freitas backed Elma and wrote: “I agree. It was really terrible what happened.”

There was no immediate response on social media from Cristiano’s doting mum Dolores or his Spanish girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez.

Katia, a singer, is known for her staunch defence of her older sibling although it was Elma who was making most of the headlines with her outburst.

In October she backed Ronaldo over the rape claims he is facing by posting a picture of him in a Superman cape with a message which read: “I want to see who has the courage to put this photo on their profile for a week and make a chain for him… for Portugal, for him, for us and for the union of our people, for justice. He deserves it.”

The cartoon-style picture of Ronaldo carried two hashtags in Portuguese. One translates as #Ronaldo, we are with you to the end and the other #Justicacr7 as #Justice for CR7.”

Katia’s message got nearly 15,000 likes in the first hour after she posted it, with one insisting in reference to the rape allegations made by American Kathryn Mayorga which Ronaldo has denied: “I support Cristiano. This seems like a trap because there are things that don’t make sense.”

Luka Modric wins Ballon d’Or 2018… and says it is all down to Harry Redknapp

LUKA MODRIC has been named as this year's winner of the coveted Ballon d'Or trophy – and says it's all down to Harry Redknapp.

The Real Madrid superstar finished above usual suspects Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, ending their ten-year stranglehold on the award.

Juventus star Ronaldo came second after winning the previous two years.

While France and Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann ended up third, with Messi finishing fifth behind PSG's Kylian Mbappe, who won the inaugural Kopa Trophy for youngsters.

But there was just one person Modric wanted to thank for the achievement.
