Astros’ Jose Altuve undergoes surgery on his right knee

All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve had surgery Friday on his right knee, just two days after the Houston Astros were eliminated from the playoffs, the club announced on Saturday.

Altuve, who served as the designated hitter in the final three games of the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox, played through knee pain much of the second half of the season.

He missed 21 games while on the disabled list from July 28-August 21 due to discomfort in his knee. The six-time All-Star  is expected to recover in time for Spring Training.

Before Game 5 of the ALCS, Astros manager A.J. Hinch acknowledged that Altuve was "playing on one leg."

"If it was any other time of the year he wouldn't be in the lineup or wouldn't be playing," Hinch said. "He'd probably be on the DL or under different circumstances."

The 2017 American League MVP batted .315 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI in 2018.
