Ashley Giles to be named England’s new supremo… just four years after being sacked as coach

Giles takes over from Andrew Strauss as team director and his appointment is likely to be confirmed in the next few days.

The former left-arm spinner, 45, has been offered the job and, although he had not actually signed last night, he is the only remaining candidate.

Giles became front-runner once former England captains such as Mike Atherton, Alec Stewart, Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan made it clear they were not interested.

Strauss stood down on compassionate leave to be with his wife Ruth, who is being treated for cancer. Giles’ own wife, Stine, has had health problems but he believes that situation is manageable.

Giles was made redundant by the ECB when he lost out to Peter Moores for the head coach role in 2014.

He has been working as one-day coach and is fate was probably sealed by a disastrous World Twenty20 campaign in Bangladesh that included a defeat by Holland.

Since then, he has worked at Lancashire and is currently sporting director at Warwickshire, who gained promotion to division one this summer.

A source said: “Gilo would leave Edgbaston with a heavy heart because the club is on the up and he knows his job is about a quarter complete.

"But this is England and he believes he has unfinished business after what happened before.”

Giles’ first big decision will be to appoint a new head coach when Aussie Trevor Bayliss departs in September.

He might decide to split the Test and one-day roles although Giles had an uneasy relationship with Test coach Andy Flower during his time with the white ball team.

Meanwhile, James Anderson is convinced England can win the World Cup for the first time next summer.

Swing king Anderson said on the Tailenders podcast: “There’s no-one really anywhere near England in the one-day format, probably India are the closest.

“In our conditions, I don’t think anyone will come near so we’ve really got to screw up not to win the World Cup.”
