Arsenal legend Thierry Henry 'wants Aston Villa job' with owners eyeing Rafa Benitez after Steve Bruce sacking

The Arsenal legend was heavily linked with the role over the summer and remains desperate to become a manager.

However, the Frenchman faces an anxious two-week wait to learn his fate, with the Mirror claiming the Villa board are planning a sensational move for Rafa Benitez.

While the Newcastle boss faces an uncertain future at St James Park, it remains very unlikely he would drop down a division to manage.

Bruce was axed after a dreadful run of form, picking up just one win from ten games.

Chelsea favourite John Terry, who was superb for Villa last season as they narrowly missed out on promotion, is also in the running for the job.

Henry is said to have been encouraged by the impact rookie manager Frank Lampard has made since taking over at Derby and now fancies a crack at the Championship himself.

The Premier League icon was  rejected for the Bordeaux job last month because his wage demands were too high.

The 41-year-old was also recently promoted to Belgium's assistant coach by Roberto Martinez.

However, he is eyeing a No 1 role sooner than later after quitting as a Sky Sports pundit back in July, citing a wish to “fulfil my long-term ambition to become a football manager”.
