Arsenal in transfer battle for Matthias Ginter in hope defender dubbed ‘The Wall’ can solve defensive crisis

Both the North London clubs are looking to strengthen their defence this summer.

And Sky Sports claim Germany international centre-back Ginter is being tracked by Unai Emery and Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs have been keen on the 25-year-old, dubbed "The Wall" in his homeland, for a while and plotted a swoop for him when he left Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for Gladbach.

The 23-capped ace is now firmly on their radar again as Poch has question marks over the long-term futures of several of his current backline.

Spurs recently triggered 12-month extensions for defensive duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, but the latter’s includes a £25m release clause with Manchester United still keen on the Belgian.

But they will face a big fight from neighbours Arsenal as their manager Emery looks to plug the gaps in his leaky defence.

The Gunners have shipped 36 goals so far this season – the most out of the top six – after a number of injury problems.

ROAD BLOCK Emery insists Arsenal’s poor away is run down to players’ mentality and NOT his tactics

Setbacks to Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and Laurent Koscielny have forced Arsenal to field full-back Stephan Lichsteiner and midfielder Granit Xhaka at centre-half.

Ginter’s impressive displays have also alerted several other of the Continent’s top teams and Gladbach could find their it hard to hang on to the ace over the coming months.
