Arsenal Europa League opponents Sporting Lisbon hope Mesut Ozil is rested after watching him sparkle against Leicester City

Ozil was in mesmerising form during Monday’s 3-1 win against Leicester and has travelled to the Portuguese capital as part of a 21-strong Gunners squad.

But despite bidding for an 11th straight win tonight, the German playmaker could be left on the bench with one eye on Sunday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.

Peseiro has studied the footage of Arsenal’s latest victory and says: “I don’t want to see something like that against my team.

“Ozil was the one who played the pass for that third goal but I don’t think he will be playing against us.

“Of course I know what Arsenal are capable of and we know it will very difficult to have more of the ball than them.

“We have to be realistic but we want to look them straight in the eyes and fight for it.”

Peseiro is still struggling to rebuild Sporting after seven players terminated their contracts in the summer following a training ground attack by a mob of angry fans.

He says: “The players never questioned their love for Sporting, they just questioned their safety and how they would be received by the fans.

“I wasn’t at the club when the attack happened but we are all aware of the difficult things the players have gone through.

“We didn’t have time to rebuild the squad because we were waiting for the players who had terminated their contracts.

“But after many face to face talks I think we were able to help the players overcome the trauma.”

Arsenal take on Sporting Lisbon in Portugal this evening, with kick-off set for 5.55pm.
