Arsenal boss Unai Emery posts touching message to Danny Welbeck after sickening ankle injury

The England forward required oxygen after landing awkwardly on his right foot in the first half of Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon.

Injury-cursed Welbeck could now be ruled out until the end of the season with a suspected broken ankle.

It also leaves his future at the Emirates in serious doubt with his current contract expiring in the summer.

And the Spanish manager left a comforting message for the 27-year-old on social media, telling his team-mates to fight and win for Welbeck in Sunday's clash against Wolves.

Alongside a montage of the forward, it read: "One more big reason to fight and win next Sunday.

"All the @Arsenal are with you. Hope to see your smile and energy soon, Danny!"

Welbeck had only been announced in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the two upcoming friendlies later this month just hours before.

He has already lost around 18 months of his career to serious injuries and now faces yet another major setback.

Speaking after the game, Emery added: "We are all thinking of Danny, we think it is a serious injury.

"It is clear we are with him in this moment. He was working hard and playing well and had already had one chance at goal.

"I haven't spoken to him. He has gone to hospital and now we wait. But it is a serious injury. It is a break to something in the ankle, a difficult injury.

"The injury is very bad for him, very bad for us and for all who love Danny and his character.

"It is not the moment to think about contract. It is the moment to think about Danny, it is a difficult problem for him and the club."

Mesut Ozil tweeted support for his team-mate, writing: "Oh no… get well soon Danny."
