Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain plays first game in nearly a year in Liverpool Under-23s game

The ex-Arsenal star, 25, has been out of action since last April with knee ligament damage but today finally returned to the pitch against Derby – only to hobble off before half-time.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was in sensational form prior to his injury, sustained against Roma in the Champions League 11 months ago.

The horror incident ruled the red-hot midfielder out of the World Cup and robbed him of almost the entire 2018-19 season.

But he lined up alongside a host of promising young Reds – including Ki Jana Hoever and Adam Lewis – against Derby, before being subbed.

Curtis Jones, Rafa Camacho and Ben Woodburn were three other youngsters on the cusp of the Anfield first-team squad given a run-out alongside Ox.

Oxlade-Chamberlain's return to action could prove pivotal for Liverpool – who are still battling it out for both the Premier League and Champions League titles.

The injury-hit Reds have lost some form domestically in recent weeks and could use some new blood – with the midfielder moving freely on his walk back to the dressing room.

While Ox's first-team return still appears to be a number of weeks away, he could play a huge role in then final few matches of the season.

With Liverpool very much in contention to knock champions Manchester City off the top spot and finally win their first Premier League title, the timing couldn't be better.
