ACT Comets youngster outshines Australian spearheads

Australian spearheads Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are preparing for one last burst as they prepare to farewell the ACT/NSW Country Comets and rejoin the Australian squad.

But again it was a local product that stole the show to put the Comets in a commanding position heading into the final day of their Futures League clash against Western Australia at Chisholm Oval.

Opening batsman Matt Gilkes tore the Western Australian attack to shreds with a stunning unbeaten 103* (133) just days after ex-Queanbeyan star Henry Hunt overshadowed the Australian quicks with a double century.

The Comets are 3-205 at stumps with a 276-run lead heading into day four, when two of world cricket's premier bowlers will unleash in their final bit of match practice before their international returns.

Cummins (0-49 from 15 overs) and Hazlewood (1-28 from 15) bowled four overs each on day three as they continue their preparations for a one-day international series against South Africa beginning on November 4.

The fast bowling duo are preparing to return to the international arena for the first time since the dismal Test series against the Proteas earlier this year.

Tom Pinson was the pick of the Comets bowlers with 3-70 as the hosts rolled Western Australia for 388, before Gilkes and Hunt (57) rammed home the advantage late in the day.
