LIVERPOOL could be set to move for Ajax attacker David Neres.

The 22 year-old played a key role in the Dutch champions' run to the Champions League semi-finals last season.

Unlike former teammates Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, however, Neres remains in Amsterdam.

According to Calcio Mercato, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is interested in bolstering his attacking options with the signature of Neres.

It was a quiet summer window at Anfield – with only Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg arriving alongside experienced back-up goalkeepers Adrian and Andy Lonergan.

The Reds currently sit top of the Premier League table.

  • EX CELTIC striker John Hartson worries that it could upset the balance at his former side if they re-sign Victor Wanyama from Tottenham.

The Daily Record claimed in the summer that the Hoops were interested in bringing the Kenyan back to Parkhead.

But Hartson isn't sure it's such a good idea.

He told Football Fan Cast: “He’s a very good midfielder but Celtic have got good midfield players.

“They’ve got a collection at their disposal and they can only play four. Does it upset the balance if you bring in Wanyama all of a sudden?

“There are a few clubs who will be interested in Wanyama. He’s big, he’s solid, he’s reliable, he’s a physical presence in both boxes.

“He’s a very, very good player and that’s why he’s playing for one of the top four clubs.”

The Kenyan has struggled for gametime at Spurs so far this season – with his only start coming in the disastrous Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to League Two Colchester.

  • TWO CHAMPIONSHIP clubs are reportedly interested in signing former Aston Villa man Birkir Bjarnason.

The Iceland international, who featured against England at Euro 2016, has been a free agent since being released by Aston Villa on the eve of the transfer deadline.

The Sunday People claim that Derby and Stoke are chasing the 31-year-old's signature – as well as German second tier side Nuremberg.

  • ARSENAL LOANEE William Saliba made his return to action from the bench as St Etienne beat Nimes 1-0 in Ligue 1.

The £27million defender has been missing with injury but replaced forward Arnaud Nordin in the 89th minute as Les Verts held on for a priceless win.

St Etienne have been struggling in Saliba's absence and would have been bottom of the table after eight matches had they lost today.

  • MANCHESTER UNITED loanee Chris Smalling turned in brilliant man-of-the-match display as Roma beat Lecce 1-0 on Sunday.

After losing his first game as a Roma player 2-0 against Atalanta, Smalling was in dominant form in Sunday's 1-0 win.

The ex-England star, 29, was the game leader in terms of clearances, recoveries, blocks, interceptions and even shots taken.

Smalling won all seven of his aerial duels and boasted a 100 per cent tackle success rate.

He made ten recoveries, three headed clearances, two interceptions and a pair of blocks to go with his four shots.

The former Maidstone United defender was given the Man of the Match award to boot as Roma climbed to fifth in the Serie A standings.
