Yellowstone volcano: USGS records 222 earthquakes across park – Warning sign of eruption?

Yellowstone volcano’s last big eruption went off roughly 640,000 years ago and many fear the supervolcano is overdue another blast. Geologists stationed in and around Yellowstone National Park keep a watchful eye on the volcano for signs of unusual activity.

But there are many who believe it is simply a matter of time before Yellowstone rears its ugly head once more.

One person said on Twitter: “Yellowstone could erupt at anytime and all of North America would be dead over the next day – or dying. Bro.”

Trevor Shelton said: “People forget that there is a supervolcano under Yellowstone that is overdue to erupt and annihilate us all.”

Another person said: “Aye when is the supervolcano in Yellowstone supposed to erupt? I’m ready tuh go.”

In February, scientists at the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a total of 222 earthquakes in the Yellowstone region.

The earthquakes were accompanied by four eruptions of the world-famous Steamboat Geyser.

The geyser erupted on February 1, 12, 21 and 38, respectively/.

The USGS said: “During February 2020, the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, responsible for the operation and analysis of the Yellowstone Seismic Network, located 222 earthquakes in the Yellowstone National Park region.

“The largest event was a minor earthquake of magnitude 2.4 located 2.5 miles northeast of Lake, in Yellowstone National Park, on February 10 at 6.14am MST.”

During this month of seismic activity, the USGS recorded three earthquake swarms on three separate dates.

The strongest of the three events erupted between February 17 and February 24, and included 68 earthquakes.

The tremors all ranged in magnitude from -0.4 to 2.1, and the largest quake was felt on February 20.

A second swarm erupted between February 11 and February 12, and included 38 earthquakes.

The swarm struck about 15 miles south-southeast of Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.

The tremors all reached magnitudes between 0.6 and 2.3.

The weakest of the three events fell between February 3 and February 4, when 12 small quakes struck.

According to the USGS, the swarm only reached magnitudes between -0.1 and 1.2 just north-northwest of West Yellowstone, Montana.

There has also been a small amount of ground deformation that matches annual activity that has begun in 2015.

However, none of these earthquakes are signs of increased activity at the supervolcano.

Instead, the USGS said: “Earthquake sequences like these are common and account for roughly 50% of the total seismicity in the Yellowstone region.

“Yellowstone earthquake activity remains at background levels.”
