Wanted man attempts escape from police on a digger in farcically-slow pursuit

A man has been arrested for stealing a car… eventually.

Jesse Shaw was wanted under three arrest warrants, plus stealing the car, and was found trying to steal a huge construction digger.

The very slow police chase, which saw the man driving the machine followed by at least four armed officers walking behind him, took place over the weekend in Oregon.

He was ordered to shut the machine down, but ignored them and started to drive away.

He eventually stopped and was handcuffed, and placed under arrest for eluding arrest, char theft and a parole violation.

Officers from both Washington County and the Oregon State Police were involved in the very low-speed – but very comical – police chase.

A spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (Oregon) said on Twitter: “Deputies knew Jesse B. Shaw had three warrants and was wanted for stealing a car.

“They found him at a property north of Banks, driving this excavator and he ignored commands to surrender. Shaw drove the excavator over half a mile with deputies following on foot until he stopped.

“Shaw was arrested for attempting to elude police today, the stolen car charges from yesterday, and three warrants – Clackamas County for delivery of meth, Columbia County for eluding arrest, and a State Parole board violation.”

The video of the incident sparked wide-spread ridicule on social media.

One user tweeted: “Probably not the best escape vehicle.”

And another added: “World’s slowest police pursuit.”

A third wrote: “That'd be what, a 20 minute mile?

“Hope they passed their fitness tests It was probably in low range.

“Otherwise they would never have caught it.”

The man is due to appear in court later this month, local news outlets report, and remains behind bars in the meantime.
