Top traits men and women look for in romantic partners, revealed

It should come as no surprise that men and women like a lot of the same things. It turns out that we’re also looking for similar things as one another in our relationships too.

Men claim that their first priority is intelligence, with 49 per cent popping that in their response. Women are looking for a sense of humour, with 53 per cent stating the importance of that trait.

Women do rank intelligence highly though, with 44 per cent claiming it’s important. And likewise, men put that humour as their third most important characteristic, with 42 per cent looking for that in a long-term partner.

Neither men nor women seem to care very much about money or social status either. It doesn’t rank in the top 10 for either.

Men, it seems, have earned their stereotype of being looks-focused though, with 43 per cent citing it as an important factor. That places it at number two for men, but with only 17 per cent of women mentioning it, it slips to position eight in their list.

Either men are a little bit more shallow or perhaps there’s a little bit of fibbing going on from the female respondents

But there really is more that unites us than separates us. Nine of the traits were shared between both sexes, meaning we’re broadly looking for the same basic qualities in our romantic partners.

There are some fun differences though. For example a small number of men consider age to be important, but at only 6 per cent it’s perhaps a lot less of a concern that we might think. Ages, interestingly, doesn’t factor at all for women.

The survey was based on a sample of 102,961 heterosexual men 5,938 gay men, 82,819 heterosexual women and 2,548 lesbian women. Most were from the UK or US but a total of 53 countries were counted in the survey.

Sexual preference made little difference to how people ranked characteristics. The gay men in the survey placed more importance on age than straight men.

All of this does carry the caveat that no one has to tell the truth in internet surveys, but if we’re lying or deluded we’re all in it together. Perhaps there’s some solace to be taken in that fact too.
