Move aside, Tesla! Sony unveils its own electric car called Afeela at CES 2023 – and it could go on sale as early as 2025

A new electric car created by Sony in partnership with Honda could go on sale as early as 2025, it was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

While more intricate details are yet to emerge about the new high-tech electric vehicle, called the Afeela, Sony has said it will be kitted out with artificial intelligence, entertainment systems, virtual reality and augmented reality.

Speaking at the tech event yesterday, the CEO of Sony Honda Mobility, Yasuhide Mizuno said: ‘Afeela represents our concept of an interactive relationship where people feel the sensation of interactive mobility and where mobility can detect and understand people and society by utilizing sensing and AI technologies.

‘As safety and security are essential to mobility, we will integrate Sony´s sensors and the Honda safety along with other intelligent technologies.’

He added that the company plans to take pre-orders in the first half of 2025 and deliver the first cars to customers in North America in the spring of 2026.

The car will have automated features, with a particular focus on urban driving.  

One of the most interesting features is that the car has an exterior bar at the front of the car to share information with other drivers.

The ‘media bar’ uses intelligent mobility to communicate to others ‘using light enabling interactive communication between mobility and people’. 

Examples of this used at the showcase included showing what the weather was, how charged the EV was and a Spider-Man design.

This includes a Time of Flight sensor that measures the distance to an object by figuring out how long it takes light to hit an object and return. 

It boasts its own built-in entertainment console, offering Sony movies, games and titles, with elements of Sony brand Playstation being integrated into the car.

It even hopes to create new values and concepts for mobility with Epic Games, the video game publisher behind Fortnite.

The Sony Honda Mobility CEO said the interior of the car had been designed to ‘be as simple as possible’ with little ornamentation and colours, making sure soft tones and comforts were used

Sony and Honda announced their 50-50 joint venture in March, bringing together Honda’s knowledge in automobiles, mobility technology and sales with Sony’s imaging, network and entertainment expertise.

The company said its services will be updated through software updates using the 5G network. 

Production of the vehicle will take place at one of Honda’s 12 plants in the US.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicked off this week in Las Vegas, with tech companies bringing their latest products to they are hoping will become popular items.

Here are some of the weird and wonderful products revealed so far this year:

  • Withings, known for its smart watches, announced it would be creating a smart device to put in your toilet, which checks your urine. The urine is then analysed to track ovulation and menstrual cycles as well as Vitamin C, ketone and hydration levels
  • Ex-Balmain footwear designer Diego Dolcini in partnership with the Italian company GAIT-TECH has created a smart insole that will make walking high heels more comfortable by redistributing pressure on the foot
  • In a rush? A French company has created a toothbrush mouthguard, dubbed the Y-Brush, which contains 35,000 nylon bristles, allegedly cleaning teeth in 10 seconds flat. It can be purchased on Amazon for around £75
  • The Evie smart ring is designed for women to monitor the wearer’s menstrual cycles, sleep patterns and other vital statistics. It will then offer ‘actionable insights’ into how the woman can ‘learn to feel her best’
  • LG showcased a 97-inch wireless television and a transparent refrigerator that changes colour depending on the mood of its owner
