A smart pillow made by lifestyle technology company 10minds wants to end the scourge of snoring once and for all.
The Motion Pillow, which was showcased at CES in Las Vegas, is a memory foam pillow that uses multiple different technologies to help alleviate issues that contribute to snoring.
Using the company’s ‘Sleep Pressure Monitoring System’ – pads inside the pillow that can detect the position of one’s head – the Motion Pillow is able to activate airbags inside the product to give sleepers’ heads and necks a nudge in the right direction.
The pillow technology is coupled with an audio detection system that is capable of hearing snores when they happen.
10Minds says the Motion Pillow has been developed for anyone with chronic snoring
Once the recorder picks up on any heavy breathing, it is able to communicate with the Motion Pillow, which then inflates airbags to reposition a user’s head.
With an optimally aligned head and neck, 10Minds aims to improve the airflow through one’s nose and reduce the possibility of snoring.
Snoring may be in the crosshairs, but 10Minds also recognizes that any pillow that jostles a user’s head too abruptly would be working counter to the Motion Pillow’s intention.
As a result, 10Minds says its product is designed to make movements subtle enough that even light sleepers won’t startle in their sleep.
In a demonstration, MailOnline, tested the product to feel just how adeptly the pillow was able to carry out its covert mission.

Though the pressure was noticeable, as was the readjustment of the neck, the pillow seemed to succeed in its effort to gently do its job, lifting and supporting the neck without any external input.
For those who want to dive even further into their snoring habits, 10Minds also offers an app that can be used to examine an overview of one’s sleeping data, including the severity of their snoring over time.
While Motion Pillow retails for a very eye-opening $376 on Amazon, the company hopes it acts as a viable alternative to more heavy-duty devices like a CPAP machine – a mask that is fixed over one’s face while they sleep.

For perspective, a CPAP machine can range in cost anywhere from $500 to $3,000 and may or may not be covered by health insurance.
The second iteration of the Motion Pillow is slated to be released in April and is currently in the middle of a crowd-funding round on Indiegogo.
That device will have an upgraded wireless snoring detection system designed to simplify the process.
Early patrons will be able to get the second version for $210 as opposed to the retail price of $410.

The annual convention will see the likes of Sony, Samsung and LG unveil new products, alongside thousands of other firms showing off their latest innovations at the four-day event.
Artificial intelligence, 5G and robotics are expected to be among the biggest talking points when the world’s largest technology show – CES – begins tomorrow.
It opens on Tuesday January 7 in Las Vegas.
High-profile figures from Apple and Facebook will also appear together on stage during the show to discuss the tech industry’s approach to data privacy – a topic the firms have previously clashed over in the past.
CES is a key date in the industry calendar, with more than 170,000 people expected to attend and more than 20,000 new devices set to be unveiled.
Ivanka Trump, daughter of US President Donald Trump and an adviser to her father’s administration, is also due to appear at the show.
Gadgets ranging from new televisions to drones, connected appliances and robots are all likely to feature heavily on the show floor, while foldable smartphones – which rose to prominence during 2019 – could also be a theme among the new devices unveiled as firms attempt to gain traction in that emerging market.
The convention, which has run since 1967, has a history of being the site of the launch of notable technology – including the DVD and HD television.
Show organisers have also highlighted that the 2020 show will see a number of ‘non-traditional’ companies not known for their work in the tech sector appearing at the event.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Impossible Foods and agricultural machinery giant John Deere are among those confirmed for CES.
CES has also committed to continue working to improve diversity at the show, following criticism in recent years that its line-up of keynote speakers has failed to showcase equality.
Jean Foster, the senior vice president for marketing and communications at the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) – which organises CES – said diversity was an industry-wide issue but confirmed CES had created an advisory board to help improve representation among its keynote speakers.
‘We take this platform very, very seriously and we want to drive the industry forward,’ she told the PA news agency last year.
