Samsung celebrated the 10th birthday of its flagship Galaxy smartphone by unveiling a lineup packed to the gills with new devices.
The Korean tech giant on Wednesday debuted a mind-boggling four Galaxy phones at its flashy Unpacked event in San Francisco – including the Galaxy S10e, S10, S10+ and a 5G Galaxy variant.
It’s billing massive screens, a notch-less design, multiple, professional-grade cameras and advanced wireless charging technology as the standout features that it hopes will attract Apple diehards away from their iPhones.
A majority of the devices’ specs were leaked in the months leading up to Samsung’s Unpacked event and several of them, like the futuristic on-screen fingerprint reader, proved to be true.
By launching four different devices, Samsung is giving consumers a range of options and price points to choose from, with the base-level Galaxy S10e starting at $749 and going up to $999 for the Galaxy S10+.

SAMSUNG’S NEW WIRELESS CHARGING TECHNOLOGY
Samsung’s new Galaxy devices all come with an innovative new wireless charging technology called ‘Wireless Power Share.’
It transforms Samsung’s flagship phones into mobile power banks.
Users can place another Samsung device, such as a phone, wireless earbuds or smartwatches directly on top of a phone to charge it.
To turn it on, swipe down to get to the notification menu and tap the power share button.
In an instant, users can lend some extra battery juice to their friend’s phone or other devices that might be low on power by holding them together.
‘With four unique devices, Galaxy S10 line is engineered to meet the distinct needs of today’s smartphone market, so consumers can do more of what they love,’ the firm explained.
‘Each device delivers a next-generation experience in the categories consumers care about most: groundbreaking innovations in display, camera and performance.’
Samsung is touting the Galaxy S10 and the S10+ as featuring their ‘best screens yet.’
The 6.1-inch Galaxy S10 and the 6.4-inch S10+ both feature the ‘world’s first Dynamic AMOLED’ HDR 10+ displays, which lends them stunningly crisp and clear colors, as well as top picture quality.
Meanwhile, for users who don’t want a super-sized device, the Galaxy S10e features a 5.8-inch display, as well as a more affordable price tag of $799.
However, even though it’s the cheapest in the range, it still packs many of the same, brand new features as its higher-end counterparts, including an in-display fingerprint reader, professional grade cameras, as well as wireless powershare technology.

Samsung has brought its ‘Infinity O’ display technology to the world for the first time, after debuting it exclusively in Asia, with the Galaxy S10 and S10+.
‘Infinity O’ describes the nearly edge-to-edge, bezel-less display, aside from a small, hole punch in the right corner.
This hole punch, which Samsung made room for in the display using a proprietary laser cutter, is what houses the front-facing camera technology, along with a range of sensors.
Suzanne De Silva, a director of product marketing at Samsung, said the phone’s high-tech sensors are ‘floating in a sea of individually placed pixels.’
‘The result is a revolutionary display that maximizes your viewing experience and minimizes the distractions,’ De Silva added.

The Galaxy S10 and S10+ use dynamic tone mapping technology so that ‘even the smallest details are clear,’ the firm said.
It can automatically adjust the color temperature to your environment, reducing annoying blue light by 42 percent without applying a filter and compromising the device’s picture quality.
A standout feature showed off by Samsung at the event was the device’s first-of-its-kind in-display fingerprint reader.
With this new technology, users can unlock their phone just by placing their thumb on the screen, instead of the usual fingerprint reader embedded on the smartphone’s bottom bezel.
Samsung said it’s an ‘ultrasonic’ fingerprint reader which works by emitting ultrasonic waves that scan your unique fingerprint.

That data is then sent back to the device’s chip, which analyzes whether or not it’s a match.
De Silva said the fingerprint scanner will work in ‘even the most challenging conditions,’ such as bright sunlight or extreme weather.
‘It makes unlocking your phone easier than ever,’ she added.
For those worried about privacy, Samsung said the device is packed with an ‘anti-spoofing algorithm’ that can identify a fake fingerprint, whether it’s 2D or 3D.
The device has ‘vault-like security to keep your data safe,’ De Silva explained.

The Galaxy S10+ packs a whopping five lenses total – a wide angle 12 megapixel, telephoto 12 megapixel, ultra wide 16 megapixel all on the back panel; as well as front-facing 10 megapixel and 8 megapixel cameras on the front.
Similarly, the Galaxy S10 includes three rear lenses and one front-facing camera.
AI is packed into the cameras via what Samsung calls a ‘neural processing unit.’
This allows the camera to make smart suggestions regarding your photos.
For example, it can tell if you’re taking a portrait photo, a photo of the sunset, or a landscape photo and change modes automatically.
It can also give users helpful tips on the screen by showing them ways their photo composition could be improved.
‘This camera is so intelligent, it’s going to make every shot worth sharing,’ De Silva explained.
Finally, when attendees thought Samsung had exhausted all of its major announcements, Samsung took the wraps off its first-ever 5G device.
The Galaxy S10 5G, which features 5G network connectivity, is expected to launch April 26th.
However, no price tag was provided by Samsung.

It features ‘hyperfast’ download and streaming speeds, a massive 6.7-inch AMOLED screen and a long-lasting battery, according to the firm.
‘Normally when you transition from one network generation to the next, you get a device that’s a little bigger and a little bulkier, but the S10 5G is as sleek as ever,’ Drew Blackard, Samsung’s senior director of marketing, said on stage.
It has ‘blazing speeds, unparalleled connectivity,’ he added.
The Galaxy S10 5G also features an AI-equipped, 3D depth sensing camera, which can add background blur to videos in real time, among other features.
It can also connect to WiFi 6, a next-generation wireless network, in addition to 5G.
With this model, Samsung said users can ‘experience the magic of 5G’ for the first time.
‘This is just the beginning of 5G,’ the firm added.
Alongside its new Galaxy range, Samsung also debuted the Galaxy Fold, its first-ever folding phone, in addition to new wearables like two smartwatches and a pair of wireless earbuds.
