A "porch pirate" stole a bloke's entrance patch before bizarrely returning it upside down.

The entryway was valued at £2,300 ($3,000) and was nabbed from the front porch of a neighbouring property to "porch pirate" Robin Swanger, who was charged in relation to the theft.

Swanger allegedly sauntered past the various "do not trespass" signs, detached the wooden platform and made off with it, but later returned it to his neighbour's property.

The abandoned porch had been resting on the neighbours' land and was not for the taking according to an investigator who stepped in to mediate the alleged theft.

Investigator Chris Stapler said: "It’s a full 8′ by 10′ porch. It would be what goes onto an house for entry and exit.

"Some people may shrug their shoulders and say it’s not a big deal, but when you take someone’s property without their consent and the value of this porch is $3,000, you can’t just go and take stuff off someone’s property."

Subsequent findings in the investigation saw the porch returned to the neighbour's property but placed upside down, New York Post reported.

Swanger is now being referred to by police as a "porch pirate", a term reserved for those who snatch packages from the doorsteps of other people's homes.

But Swanger did not eye up a package or parcel on the porch, but the entrance itself, which disappeared from his neighbours' land for an undetermined amount of time.

Authorities were on the lookout for Swanger for some time before a domestic disturbance call brought them to his home.

He has now been charged with two counts of domestic violence, including battery.

Police confirmed Swanger had been arrested for the porch theft when the further charges were levelled at the man, who was charged separately for the domestic disturbances.
