People convinced Greta Thunberg is a time traveller pictured 120 years ago

Environmentalist Greta Thunberg could be a time traveller if certain social media users are to be believed.

A photograph taken 120 years ago has gone viral for capturing a girl who bears a spookily striking resemblance to the 19-year-old Swede.

Add to the photo 'evidence' the fact she has spoken so passionately about climate issues to global audiences as just a teenager, and conspiracy theories have been offered.

The snap from 1989 was taken by Eric Hegg at a gold mine in Canada's Yukon territory. In it are three unidentified children hard at work at a manmade pit on the ground's surface.

There is no question one of the youngsters looks like Greta but some Twitter users have gone one step further to claim it was in actual fact her, thanks to time travelling technology.

One person shared the photo saying: "In other news, Greta Thunberg is a time traveller."

Another commented: "I'm not one for conspiracy theories but she is 100% a time traveller."

According to one theory, Greta has come from the future to save the world from the devastating effects of global warming.

"So 'Greta Thunberg' is in a photo from 120 years ago, and it's my new favourite conspiracy," a third wrote. "Greta's a time traveller, from the future, and she's here to save us."

"120-year-old photo sparks theories that climate activist & environmental heroine, Greta Thunberg, is, in fact, a 'time-travel' who has travelled thru time to save our planet!"

Someone added: "Wishing her all the best and success in her mission to save the Earth. We can use the help we can get!"

Seattle-based University of Washington in the US now owns the photo which has pulled in multiple interview requests to discuss it and even more to use it since 2019.

Archivist Lisa Oberg told CBC: "We've had about 15 to 20 requests just to talk about the photo, and we're getting into almost the triple digits now, in terms of requests to use the photo."
