‘Oldest dog in the world’ celebrates birthday as ‘miracle’ pooch turns 23

A "miracle" dog celebrated turning an incredible 23, with the family calling it the "oldest pooch in the world".

Ladybug, affectionately nicknamed "buggy" by the family, has been knocking around since January 3, 2000, and has laid claim to being the oldest dog on the planet.

It would certainly appear to be, with the geriatric, United States-based K-9 competing for the Guinness World Record for oldest dog living, set by Gino Wolf who was born in September 2000, The Mirror reported.

Such a record was verified in November 2022, but Buggy the pooch's recent celebrations could put that mark up for debate.

Owner Mary Ho Hughes has labelled the elderly pooch a "miracle", and is quite proud of Ladybug celebrating that start of her 24th year on Earth.

She said: "It's a good thing to come into this afternoon. We just love celebrating with her and we're so glad that she's still here with us at 23. She's a miracle."

The family, who lovingly refer to their pet as a "dumpster" dog, is also considering getting the Guinness World Records involved to ratify the birth of their elderly dog.

Hughes added: "No matter how much we groom her, she looked like she crawled out of a dumpster."

But current record holder, Gino, appears to be in "relatively good shape" and could give dumpster dog Buggy a run for their money.

Owner of Gino, Alex Wolf, said: "I've taken great care of him over the years and he is still in relatively very good shape…and really cute still which is surprising considering his age."

Gino is the current Guinness World Record holder, and Wolf credited his elderly pooch with being "strong", noting that the dog is simply "the best".

Speaking to Fox at the time of the record awarding, owner Alex Wolf said: "I give him all the credit. He's gotten a lot of love, and I think he's just a strong dog. He's the best."
