Spymasters want a spook with a crystal ball to see up to seven years into the future.

They will be expected to spot where security threats will come from in 2030.

And they must work out the type of tech and techniques – such as artificial intelligence bots – that could be used by cyber criminals and rogue foreign states.

The £56,000 information technology researcher for MI5 will need to be an expert on how wireless networks are used to wreak havoc.

An advert for the role says: “The research you will be developing will be future focused, looking out between three and seven years, and based on a research theme area.”

Candidates should have an interest in vehicle computer systems to help track and collate information on targets. The advert adds: “MI5 safeguards the UK against threats such as terrorism, espionage, cyber and sabotage.

“We investigate suspect individuals and organisations in the UK to obtain, collate, analyse and assess secret intelligence relating to these threats.

“You’ll enjoy varied and rewarding work in a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

“We oversee activities including academic and industry horizon scanning; strategic technology research to inform organisational priorities; and applied research and prototype development to assist capability development.

"In addition, we build science, technology, engineering, and mathematics capability to enhance operations.”
