On Sunday, March 28, the third Full Moon of the year will rise. The March Moon is known as the Worm Moon as certain native North American tribes named it after the time of the year when earthworms first surfaced. As temperatures take a slight uptick coupled with spring drizzles, it is a time when earthworms begin to reappear and birds begin to feed on them.
When will the Full Moon peak?
For three days on either side of March 28, the Moon will appear full to the naked eye.
However, there is a slight fraction of our lunar satellite which will still be in the Earth’s shadow.
That is until 19:48 on March 28 when the Moon will be 100 percent illuminated.
After that, the Moon will continue on its lunar cycle until it is completely shadowed by Earth.
Then, a new lunar cycle will begin on April 12.
Thankfully, the Moon will not be totally obscured by clouds this weekend, although the skies will be patchy, according to the Met Office.
The meteorological service said: “Rain across central areas moving north, persistent and heavy over northwest England and western Scotland.
“Further south mostly dry, some bright or sunny spells in the southeast. Mild but windy.”
The coming Worm Moon will also be a Supermoon.
On average, the Moon is 238,000 miles from Earth, but during a Supermoon the can be 221,000 miles away from our planet.
This is because the Moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle and is actually slightly oval.
As such, the Moon will appear slightly larger than usual.
Only three or four Supermoons appear in a single year.
