The woman, who only introduced herself as Caren, said she experienced the afterlife after being examined for pulmonary hypertension. Speaking to the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF), Caren said she passed out in hospital after which she was clinically dead for about 30 seconds. Despite being clinically dead, Caren claims to vividly remember everything that happened, including visions of bright light and Jesus Christ.
Caren said: “The last thing I remember was almost making it to my bed. My mother, who was waiting outside my room, told me that I passed out
“She said that several nurses came over and hooked me up to a machine which gave my vital signs. My mother had to wait outside the room and all she could do was listen.
“She heard the nurses say my blood pressure was dropping and that there were losing me. They called a ‘code blue’ and brought in a crash cart.
“Apparently I had no vital signs for approximately 30 seconds, a very short time before I came back.”

After drifting away, Caren recalls everything turning to black before a bright light appeared.
In the bright light, she saw Jesus sitting on a green lawn chair.
Caren said: “He just looked at me and smiled. He looked just as I thought he would with the white robe and glowing light all around him.
“He didn’t say anything to me; He just smiles and then I woke up.”
After waking up, Caren shared her bizarre experience with her mother.

However, medical institutions like the NHS do not consider incidents like a brief cardiac arrest to be genuine instances of death.
Instead, brain stem death is the more accepted definition of death.
The NHS said in 2014: “While it is possible to keep the heart functioning using life support systems, a person with brain stem death has permanently lost the potential for consciousness.
“The existence of an ‘afterlife’ remains a matter of belief, not scientific proof.”

Many experts believe there are natural explanations for near-death experiences that do not involve supernatural phenomena.
According to Neil Dagnall and Ken Drinkwater of Manchester Metropolitan University, explanations range from a sudden release of endorphins or the psychedelic drug dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in the brain.
In an article for The Conversation, they wrote: “Researchers have also explained near-death experiences via cerebral anoxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain.
“One researcher found air pilots who experienced unconsciousness during rapid acceleration described near-death experience-like features, such as tunnel vision.
“Lack of oxygen may also trigger temporal lobe seizures which causes hallucinations.
“These may be similar to a near-death experience.”
However, the experts noted there is no widely accepted answer as to why so many NDEs are characterised by vivid memories and visions of the afterlife.
Many people who undergo NDEs recall flying through a tunnel, seeing bright lights or describe sensations of leaving their bodies.
