How the order of your drinks affects your hangover

It’s an age-old saying, but it seems that ‘beer before wine and you’ll feel fine; wine before beer and you’ll feel queer’ has no truth behind it.

A new study by researchers from the Herdecke University and the University of Cambridge has revealed that it doesn’t matter how you order your drinks – if you drink too much, you’ll still get a hangover.

In the study, 90 volunteers aged 19-40 were split into three groups.

One group drank 2.5 pints of beer followed by four large glasses of wine, while the second group had the same drinks, but in reverse order.

Finally, the third group drank either only beer or only wine.

Before going to bed, all participants were given water, and overnight were kept under medical supervision.

To verify the findings, a week later, participants in the first two groups were switched to the opposite drinking order.

The results showed that none of the three groups had significantly different hangovers with different order of alcoholic drinks.

However, women tended to have slightly worse hangovers than men.

Jöran Köchling, who led the study, said: “Using white wine and lager beer, we didn’t find any truth in the idea that drinking beer before wine gives you a milder hangover than the other way around.

“The truth is that drinking too much of any alcoholic drink is likely to result in a hangover.

“The only reliable way of predicting how miserable you’ll feel the next day is by how drunk you feel and whether you are sick. We should all pay attention to these red flags when drinking.”
