How long the average sex session lasts – see how you measure up

It’s not something that’s widely talked about – so just how long does the average sex session last?

In a recent article for The Conversation, Dr Brendan Zietsch, a psychologist at the University of Queensland, attempted to answer this surprisingly complicated question.

He said: “I know there’s a lot more to sex than putting the penis into the vagina and ejaculating, but the rest is not always easy to define (kissing? Rubbing? Grinding?).

"To keep things simple and specific, we’ll just focus on the time to ejaculation.”

Dr Zietsch focused on a 2005 study, which involved 500 couples from around the world timing themselves having sex over a four week period.

The couples would start a stopwatch as the penis entered the vagina, and stop it as the man ejaculated.

But what was the average length across all sex sessions? 5.4 minutes.

Dr Zietsch added: “It’s clear there’s no one ‘normal’ amount of time to have sex.”
