Homes on Mars will have gyms and spas – but they won’t be cheap

While you might think the first humans on Mars would be confined to basic accommodation, experts predict that this won’t be the case.

Quite to the contrary, Mars expert Stephen Petranek and Professor David Dinges, an expert on human behaviour from the University of Pennsylvania, suggest settlers will live in plush apartments with gyms and even spas.

To celebrate the launch of the second series of MARS on National Geographic, the experts have come up with designs for three houses on the red planet.

The first is an apartment aimed at young professionals, which features a shared garden, tinted windows and a water filled skylight, which the experts say would cost £350,000.

Next is a family home complete with an inbuilt garage, conservatory-style veranda and private garden, that would cost £650,000.

And for those looking for luxury, the experts also predict that there will be mansions on Mars.

The mansion, which costs £2.5 million, boasts a private garden, gym, spa, car-port and even a games room!

National Geographic also surveyed 2,000 people about their thoughts on living on Mars.

Amazingly, 10% of respondents said they’d happily move to Mars if the opportunity arose tomorrow.

Meanwhile 15% said that buying property on Mars is more attractive than on Earth.

Mr Petranek said: “Ultimately, living on Mars must seem more appealing and psychologically inviting than living on Earth or not enough people will want to make a new life there.

“As we make these predictions now, we can only wonder what designs we will actually adopt as hundreds of thousands of people eventually move to the Red Planet.”
