Hero cat’s ‘furious meows’ saves owner after she plunges 70ft in horror fall

A black cat has been hailed a hero after its 'meows' sparked a rescue effort for the pet's owner who fell 70ft down a steep embankment.

The woman crashed through barbed wire and ended up in a stream.

The 83-year-old was reported missing by her friend who alerted the woman's neighbour Tamar Longmuir, 38, who helped launch a search at a farm in Bodmin, Cornwall on Saturday.

But after an initial search proved fruitless to locate the woman, it was only when her cat was spotted 'meowing' in the corner of a cornfield that rescuers were tipped off as to her remote whereabouts.

After locating her, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were called in and joined by water rescuers, Cornwall Air Ambulance, and the South Western Ambulance Service.

Once on the scene, they were able to hoist the woman safely back to the field on a stretcher via line rescue before being airlifted to hospital, where she is said to be in a stable condition.

Informing people what happened, Bodmin Police posted on their Facebook: "This afternoon, officers from Bodmin were tasked to conduct a search for a missing 83-year-old female.

"The female was located by a member of the public who had spotted the female’s cat, meowing in the corner of a large maize field near to her home address."

"The elderly female had fallen approximately 70ft down a very steep embankment, with incredibly difficult access and uneven terrain.

"Piran the cat saved the day!"

And the public who heard of the story on Cornwall Live have been quick to praise the cat who helped rescue the elderly lady stating he's earned itself a treat or two for saving the day.

One reader posted: "Lovely to read a heart-warming story. Hope the lady will be ok.

"Lots of respect to all concerned and Piran you are a hero too saving your mum."

Another added: "Hope the dear lady recovers quickly. Dear cat deserves a sardine or two."
