Google Maps users have been left spooked by a "weird symbol" they spotted in the ocean that looks like a face.

The creepy image, which shows three shadow-like cylinders hovering above the water, was found by Reddit user Awkward_Champ and posted on the r/GoogleMaps subreddit.

He posted the snap, saying: "What is this weird looking thing in the ocean?"

Situated just off the coast of Santa Barbara, the mysterious snap has caused many on the forum website to question what the symbol could be.

Some have claimed the three cylinders look like a face in the water, while others have claimed it could even be Morse Code.

One Reddit user said: "Looks like a surprised face.

"Maybe investigate further by zooming in. Could be some sort of structure there."

Another stated: "K in Morse Code."

A third replied: "Crystal ships."

But some nifty online investigators believe they have found the answer.

"Might be where the oil rigs are," said one. Another agreed: "If you look in Google Maps, the resolution is better.

"Oil rigs – visible also in street view from the shore in Santa Barbara."

In other Google Maps news, someone perusing their neighbourhood because they wanted to buy a property was astonished when they saw the word 'b***h' mowed into a lawn.

"Looking around my neighbourhood for a house to buy and came across a B!tch," the shocked person wrote on Reddit.

Accompanying their message was a screen grab of the incriminating view, with an otherwise leafy superb featuring the rude word and a huge arrow pointing towards what appears to be a neighbour's house.

Given the size of the massive yard, believed to be in the US, the letters could be 25ft tall, as well as appearing to be as wide as the house they are set behind.
