First settlers on Mars will have to adopt a vegan diet, study reveals

The first settlers on Mars will have to adopt a vegan diet , according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Westminster and Hillarys have given a glimpse of what life might be like on the red planet – and it’s not good news for meat fans.

In their project, called ‘Home on Mars’, the researchers created a model of what the first homes on Mars could look like, and how the first settlers will live.

Their model home includes an airlock front door to maintain air pressure in the home, as well as a protective layer of soil to shield from dangerous levels of radiation.

‘Space farms’ are also likely to feature next to each home, where humans would produce their own crops.

This means that homeowners will need to adopt a vegan diet – bar the occasional side of insects.

Professor Lewis Dartnell, who led the project, said: “Humanity will venture out through the solar system probably sooner rather than later, and Mars is the most enticing location to move house.

"To survive on the red planet, Martian houses will have to look a lot like what we’ve depicted in this project.

“But although living on Mars may sound exciting, would you want to spend most of your days indoors and not able to phone your friends and family back on Earth?”
