‘Face of witch’ spotted lurking in the trees of haunted North Wales wood

A rambler captured the 'creepy' image in Llanddona, Anglesey which was a hotbed of witchcraft and sorcery in the 17th Century

The "face of a witch" hiding in trees in a North Wales woodland has been captured on camera, a rambler claims.

Gwen Richards took the spooky image while she was searching for a footpath for a local rambler's group on Anglesey.

It wasn’t until she arrived home and looked back at the picture that she noticed something unexpected lurking in the trees.

She shared the picture on the Images of Anglesey group on Facebook and hundreds told her they could see the face of a witch in the trees.

The hairs on the back of Gwen's neck really stood up though when locals pointed out that the area around Llanddona was a hotbed for witchcraft and sorcery in the 17th Century.

According to legend a sinking boat full of men and women struggled ashore at nearby Red Wharf Bay without rudder or oars.

Afraid of those aboard the boat, the people of Llanddona are said to have driven it back into the sea.

But one woman, believed to be a witch, leapt ashore and struck the sand with a stick, causing a spring of pure water to burst forth on the sands – leaving locals falling back in horror.

An agreement was reached and the boat people were all allowed to stay, provided they made their settlement outside the village, not far from the woods where Gwen was walking.

Two of the Llanddona witches still talked about today and part of that group are Bella Fawr and Siani Bwt who each had four thumbs.

Legend says the men lived by smuggling, and the women begged and practised witchcraft.

They paid for nothing in shops and cast spells on farms and animals and charged to have them removed.

Gwen told North Wales Live: "There’s a tree trunk in the background and the path is just to the right of that.

"Just to the right of the tree trunk, the space is taken up with a lot of twigs which look like the hair, and then two dark spots which are the eyes.

"When you can see it, you can’t unsee it.”

Locals on Facebook are convinced it shows one or possibly two of the famous local witches: "Gosh saw the face straight away, with long hair on the right, that's spooky.”

Another added: "I find the face quite scary. Lovely pic otherwise."

A third said: “Saw it straight away, fascinating yet spooky.”

A fourth claimed to see two witches in Gwen's picture: "Can anyone else see more than one face? I can see another in the eye and another at the bottom of the ‘main face’."

Despite the supernatural history Gwen said she would not be put off going back to the woods: "No, I’m tough enough.

"It’s a familiar path (but) I’ve never seen anything like it before."
