Earth leaking so many signals into space that ‘nosy’ aliens may be spying on us

Earth is “leaking” so many radio signals that aliens could be listening in to our phone calls, say boffins.

They say the 1.5 million-plus mobile phone masts on Earth generate “radio leakage” that can be picked up in outer space.

And they reckon nosy ETs could be at work on Barnard’s Star, just six light years from us.

A science journal described it as “practically in our galactic back yard” and added that this maximised “the snooping capabilities of any nosy aliens”.

It added: “It’s still possible ET could listen in on our cell phones provided they are close enough, in the right part of the sky and have slightly better tech on hand than we do now.”

And the report warned: “We will have more than one hundred thousand satellites in low Earth orbit and beyond before the end of the decade.

“If the trend continues, we may become readily detectable by any advanced civilisation with the right technology.”

Michael Garrett, inset, of the University of Manchester, added the report had not even taken into account Wi-Fi signals, which could increase our visibility further.

He added: “You might hope they are sufficiently developed, not only in technology but in ethics and morals, that they wouldn’t represent a threat. But you never know.”

The report was published in the Monthly Notices Of The Royal Astronomical Society.
