Coronavirus in the Bible: Bizarre claim virus is punishment for Christian persecution

The coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has infected more than 316,000 people since it appeared in China last November. The virus has brought the world to a standstill, forcing millions of people to isolate while the death toll steadily climbs.

Billy Prewitt, author of The Coronavirus in Biblical Prophecy, believes these are the signs of God unleashing his vengeance upon mankind.

In his book, the author has bizarrely claimed there are strong comparisons to be made between coronavirus and the biblical plagues of Egypt.

In one instance, God delivered 10 calamities upon Egypt as punishment for the enslavement of the Jewish people.

Now, Mr Prewitt said God has sent the coronavirus down to Earth as punishment for the persecution of Christians.

He wrote: “We already know we have a problem, but what does it all mean?

“For starters, it means that the predictions of Jesus are once again proven to be accurate.

“He said that pestilences, or diseases, would come 9(Matthew 24:7).

“The coronavirus is one of who knows how many diseases he meant, but the fact that is has affected the whole planet in such dramatic fashion forces to consider its prophetic ramifications.”

According to Mr Prewitt, the coronavirus mirrors passages from the Old Testament penned in the Book of Exodus.

In Exodus 9:13, Moses told the Egyptian Pharaoh God would “smite thee and thy people with pestilence” as punishment for the injustices against the Jewish people.

Mr Prewitt then cited passages from Samuel 5-6, which also describe God punishing an unruly tribe of people with “deadly destruction”.

He said: “When we look for parallels between what is happening in China and the narratives of Scripture, there are many.

“Egypt suffered great plagues mostly because they laid hands on God’s chosen people.

“The Philistines mentioned earlier, were plagued on more than one occasion for their dealings with the Hebrews.

“Even in the New Testament, Herod was smitten with worms.

“The stated reason is that he did not give glory to God, but it cannot be overlooked that the context of the passage follows his persecution of the Christians.”

But is there any reason to believe the coronavirus is biblical and not natural?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) SARS-CoV-2 is a member of the coronavirus family of pathogens.

The viruses are zoonotic, meaning they are carried by animals and humans alike.

Scientists know of only seven human coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, but many undiscovered strains are likely carried by wild animals.

Coronaviruses have been responsible for past epidemics, namely the 2002 to 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (SARS-Cov) health scare.
