Bloke can’t afford Lamborghini Aventador – so he makes one on his 3D printer

After a particularly thrilling game of Forza with his son, Xander, the pair got to talking about how much they’d like to own a Lamborghini Aventador.

The Italian supercar is out of most peoples’ price range though, so they had to think of a more creative solution.

So they ended up printing out their own Lambo, at a total cost of around $20,000. Although, Sterling confided to 3D writing hobbyist site All 3DP, you “don’t want to know” the working hours involved.

Sterling and Xander have been working on the Lambo replica for around a year and a half now, and they’re getting close to completion.

“I am kind of winging it”

Each panel has been printed in sections using printers bought from Amazon, and the sections are then glued together and wrapped in carbon-fibre Kevlar.

Certain parts, such as the engine and lights, can’t be printed so Sterling has bought them in.

His “Lambo” is powered by an LS1 V8 engine taken from a 2003 Chevrolet Corvette, modified with two turbochargers and combined with an inverted Porsche 996 911 transaxle.

“I sourced used or cheap new Lamborghini parts such as the door windows, rear view mirror, side mirror glass, marker lights, latches and strikers for the doors, and wiper arms from the internet,” Sterling told Which Car.

“Some parts from Audis were also sourced, such as the steering wheel and some switches.”

While Sterling’s impressive achievement might point the way towards the auto industry suffering the same piracy problems that have plagued the music and movie industries, in the short term it’s an inspiring tale of determination and inventiveness.
