Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping held a video meeting, as the tension between the West and both countries are at the highest in recent times. President Xi said that Putin “strongly supported China’s efforts to protect key national interests and firmly opposed attempts to drive a wedge between our countries”.
This statement is seen as a show of strength to the West, as tensions soar between the US and Russia in Ukraine, and with China in the South China Sea.
Gordon Chang, an expert on US-China affairs, told Express.co.uk: “When Putin and Xi Jinping get together, even just virtually, there’s no good result from this.
“Both of them see an opportunity now that they can do what they want.
“The thing that really worries me about this is that you don’t need to have Russia and China actually coordinating with each other with phone calls and such.
“When one of them does something that disturbs the peace, the other one is going to take advantage of the situation.
“They both see that the Biden administration is not up to the task of protecting not only the US, but also the international system.”
Mr Chang further criticised Biden, comparing his apparent inaction to the Munich agreement of 1938, which was a failed treaty involving the UK and France that allowed Adolf Hitler and Germany to annex large parts of Czechoslovakia.
He said: “You have Biden almost ratifying Russia’s seizures of Crimea and the Donbas, and now he’s talking to him about what? This is really dangerous.
“Biden is never going to learn from the history of the 1930s.
“What really bothers me is that Biden says that if Russia moves on Ukraine, the US won’t use military force to oppose them.
“I’ve got a newsflash for Biden, the US is a party to the Budapest memorandum of 1994, where the US guaranteed the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine.
“This is really bad. Russia is the aggressor but Biden is permitting him to be. This is perhaps a prelude to war.”

Mr Chang also warned of a possible war in space, as China and Russia deepen military ties and collaborations in space.
The trust between the two countries is growing as China agreed to host ground monitoring stations for Russia’s GLONASS space-based satellite navigation system on its soil.
Meanwhile, Russia has agreed to host ground stations for China’s BeiDou system.
When asked if space could be the new frontier of war, Mr Chang said: “There could very well be war in space.
“One of the very first ways we know that war has occurred is that we start losing our assets in space.
“We know that the Russians and the Chinese are collaborating there.”
On Thursday, Russia test-launched its new Angara-5 rocket from Plesetsk Cosmodrome.
Angara rockets are a family of space-launch vehicles that are set to replace existing Russian rockets.
These vehicles can carry payloads up to 24,500kg into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) or 7,500kg into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
