Bear bites woman on bum as she sits on outdoor toilet after climbing underneath

A woman was bitten on the bum by a bear the moment she sat down on an outdoor toilet in the United States.

Screaming in both shock and pain, Shannon Stevens jumped off the seat with blood trickling out of her behind which she guessed was the work of a mink or similar small animal, Adn.com reports.

Shannon's brother Erik ran over with a torch to investigate and saw a bear's face looking up at him from the bottom of the loo hole outside the yurt at his Chilkat Lake property in Alaska.

Shannon said: "I just sat down and the thing bit me right away. I jumped up, screamed, screamed for my brother."

Erik added: "She screamed, 'Something bit me.' I’m thinking, 'Oh, there’s probably a mink or some smaller animal in there'. Then she screamed again, 'I’m bleeding'.

"She was still standing there with her pants down. I said, 'What bit you? Where is it?' And she said, 'In the hole'.

"I shined the headlamp and opened the lid, and right there at the level of the toilet seat was a cinnamon-coloured bear face, big enough to fill the hole."

Luckily Erik said the bear was nowhere to be seen the following morning, only large animal tracks leading from the fire pit, where they’d cooked dinner, to the outhouse.

After receiving photos from the siblings, wildlife biologist Carl Koch at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game agreed they were bear prints but had never heard a story like it.

Mr Koch said: "I believe it was a bear as do my colleagues.

"I have heard stories of people having scares near outhouses in the spring and summer when bears are normally out, but never in winter and definitely not from underneath while sitting down."

Shannon has not ruled out using outhouses in the future but admits she will practice a "look before you sit" policy in the future.

Still unaware of whether she was bitten or swiped by a claw, she said on Tuesday that the wound was now mostly just bruising and plans to make an appointment to find out if she needs shots including rabies and tetanus.
