Apple has started to roll out the latest version of its operating system to iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch models worldwide.
The new software, dubbed iOS 12, features an app called Screen Time that records how many hours you spend using your device.
It also includes a revamped Photos app, new Animoji characters, Siri Shortcuts and tweaks to boost the speed and responsiveness of older Apple hardware.
To download the latest operating system update, head to Settings, then tap on General and Software Update.

HOW TO INSTALL IOS 12
To install iOS 12, you must have a device running its predecessor, iOS 11.
Once the update is available, head to your settings.
Tap tap General, and then Software Update on your Apple device.
You will need a WiFi connection and have to be connected to a charger if your battery is lower than 50 per cent.
Apple requires you to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to download the latest software update.
If your iPhone has less than 50 per cent charge, the update to iOS 12 will not start until you connect your smartphone to a charger.
iOS 12 is available on all the same devices as its predecessor, iOS 11.
The operating system rolled-out to Apple device owners at 1:00pm ET (6:00pm BST) on Monday.
Apple announced iOS 12 during its annual WWDC developer conference, where the company focused on the performance boost to older devices promised by its newest operating system.
On four-year-old smartphone models, like the iPhone 6, the software is expected to increase the speed of some operations by 70 per cent.
This should help apps launch and run faster, as well as speed up camera features and cut out keyboard glitches when typing.

HOW TO CREATE A MEMOJI IN IOS12
Open Messages on your iPhone.
Launch a recent chat and then tap on the Animoji button — illustrated with a smiling monkey face.
Tap the + symbol inside the panel that loads to create a Memoji.
Apple lets you customise the shape of the face, skin tone, glasses, and more.
When you’re happy with the creation, hit the Done button in the top right-hand corner to save your character.
Select the Memoji you’ve created from the roster of faces and then speak as normal to animate their facial features.
‘iOS 12 is designed to make your iPhone and iPad experience even faster, more responsive, and more delightful,’ Apple wrote on its website.
‘Things you do all the time, like launching Camera and typing with the keyboard, happen faster than ever.’
Apple has added a number of new tools to its operating software, as well as upgrades to existing technology.
New features include Screen Time – an app that helps you track how much time you spend on your phone or tablet.
Screen Time reveals the total number of hours spent on your Apple device, as well as a breakdown of the number of times you’ve picked up your handset.
The App Limits feature allows you to set a specific amount of time to be in an app, and a notification will display when a time limit is about to expire.
Parents can access their child’s Activity Report right from their own iOS devices to understand where their child spends their time and can manage and set App Limits for them.
The new iOS 12, which has been available to beta users and developers since Apple’s WWDC event in June, promises to pack a slew of improvements for iPhones and iPads from iOS 11
HOW TO USE APPLE’S SCREEN TIME FEATURE
Screen Time is a setting, and does not have its own dedicated to app.
To use the feature in iOS 12, head to the Settings menu on your device.
Scroll down to the new ‘Screen Time’ section.
The tool is buried among your settings for Notifications and Sounds.
Tap on Screen Time to see your device statistics.
You can see how often you pick up your iOS device, which apps you’re using, which apps are sending the most notifications, and other details.
You can toggle the statistics between the last 24 hours and the last seven days.
Users now have greater control over notifications, so that they’re grouped on the screen based on apps and topics.
What’s more, certain notifications can also be blocked from appearing on the lock screen.
An expanded Do Not Disturb feature allows users to wipe their notification screen clean before bedtime and when they wake up in the morning.
Users will also be able to create their own shortcuts for Siri, teaching it the phrases they want to use.
They can use a new ‘shortcuts’ app to create the shortcuts they use.
Siri has also got a major upgrade, and app developers will be able to use Siri for the first time.
Third-party apps will now be able to let users invoke Siri for commonly used tasks, much the way competing assistants from Google and Amazon long have.
It also comes with AR Kit 2, an upgraded version of Apple’s augmented reality platform for developers, that includes the ability to measure the size of real-world objects.
AR Kit 2 also features multiplayer game play.

WHAT IS NEW IN APPLE’S iOS 12?
Once Apple users upgrade to iOS 12 they will see a host of changes to how their device works.
It will power the iPhone and iPad and packs a slew of new features aimed at improving your device’s performance, as well as fun augmented reality tools.

Augmented reality
Apple has released the next version of its augmented reality platform for developers, called ARKit 2.
ARKit, which was first launched in 2017, now has improved face tracking, 3D, object detection and a more persistent experience.
Multi-user virtual environments are also featured in the ARKit 2, so that more than one person can see the same perspective in real time.
Apple also announced a new AR app called ‘Measure’ that lets you see the dimensions of objects, like photos or chairs, and get automatic measurements
Photos
Apple’s Photos app has seen a significant upgrade in order to allow the feature to become smarter.
In iOS 12, the Photos app will now display search suggestions when a user is looking for a specific picture, based on things that appear in the photo, including cars, dogs and flowers.
There’s also a new ‘For You’ tab, that shows memories, as well as sharing suggestions.
It suggests that you share photos with a friend if they appear in a photo and then prompts the friend to share photos with you if you appear in their photos.

Siri
Apple has rolled out a new feature in iOS12 called Shortcuts, which adds ‘quick actions’ for any app.
For example, a user can change their settings so that if they say ‘I lost my keys’, it will prompt Siri to pull up the Tile app and show you where your keys are.
Another new tool is called Suggestions, where Siri prompts the user to take certain actions in iOS, such as order their favorite coffee that they drink every morning.

The Stock app has received a major upgrade and now lets users tap on certain stocks to get detailed information.

Apple has also revealed a new and improved Books app, renaming it Apple Books from iBooks.

Users can swipe on a group of notifications and choose to view them later, removing them from the lock screen.
Better performance
Apple said iOS 12 will significantly improve how apps load and other performance features on iOS devices.
In iOS 12, apps will load up to 40 per cent faster, the keyboard will come up 50 per cent faster and sliding open to the camera will be 70 per cent faster, even on older devices like the iPhone 5S.

HOW TO USE APPLE’S MEASURE APP
The Measure App uses augmented reality to act as a tape measure or ruler.
To access the app, tap on it within your home screen.
It will ask you to move your phone around so it can analyse the area.
Line the white dot up with a corner on the item you want to measure.
Press the white button with the sign in the middle of it and trace the edge of the line you want to measure.
There’s also new animojis like the T Rex, ghost, koala and tiger, in addition to the ability to create your own personalised Memoji, or a personalised emoji that looks just like you.
Before installing iOS 12, users must make sure they have at least iOS 11 in order to gain access to iOS 12.
In addition to older devices, the update is available out of the box on the latest iPhones, which include the budget $749 ($749) iPhone XR, the $999 (£999) iPhone XS and the $1,099 (£1,099) iPhone XS Max.
iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will start shipping to customers who pre-ordered last week on Friday September 21 2018.

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE IPHONE XS AND XS MAX?
The iPhone XS and larger XS Max are Apple’s latest flagship devices.
The pair have a similar design and features to the existing iPhone X – including its much-hyped Face ID unlock system – with a few key additions.
They hit stores on September 21, 2018 with the iPhone XS priced at $999 (£999) and the XS Max a whopping $1,099 (£1,099).
Like the iPhone X, the XS has a 5.8-inch OLED screen, while the XS Max boasts a mammoth 6.5-inch OLED display.
For comparison, the iPhone XS Max is bigger even than the Galaxy Note 9, which spans 6.4 inches.
The XS and XS Max have dual 12-megapixel rear cameras and a dual 7-megapixel selfie camera – just like the iPhone X.

Apple has bolstered the batteries loaded into each phone too.
It claims the iPhone XS runs for half an hour longer than last year’s X, while the XS Max lasts an additional 1.5 hours.
Apple’s newest phones feature faster processors and better memory capacities than their predecessor.
Both are loaded with Apple’s new A12 Bionic chip, which Apple claims runs run 15 per cent faster than the A11 chip in the iPhone X.
The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are shipping in 64GB, 256GB or 512GB — the largest in-built storage ever shipped on an Apple-branded smartphone.
They are available in gold, silver and space grey.
